Amora’s Delights, which was birthed from a need from business owner Swanna Williams, has now blossomed into a thriving endeavor.
Williams, who is an educator, told ANN in that interview that while she has been selling local stews and tamarind balls, she branched out into pastries, other savory treats and cakes in order to raise funds to send her daughter on a Girl Guide trip in 2018.
“I started selling lunches at the St. Martins Secondary School (SMSS) around 2014 but it wasn’t until my daughter was embarking on a Girl Guides camp to Malta back in 2018 and had to come up with about $10,000 that I decided on alternatives. Being a single parent, I had to find ways of raising the funds so that she could go. I got permission from the principal to sell pastry and so I reached out to my sister to assist in the provision of patties and cupcakes to sell at school. It was a hit with the students and teachers alike.”
After being deemed a hit among her peers and students, she decided to enroll in a pastry and cake making course to get certified, so she could produce the items herself and turn a profit.
“With great reviews and repeated customers. I decided to make it into a business. This is the second half of the business though, as the first is local stews/syrups and tamarind balls” she explained.
The entrepreneur said that she believes that she has been successful so far because she accomplished set goals and purpose, however, she said that there is always room to grow.
Williams said that she is now able to use the profits from her business off-set some of my financial burdens and provide the best experiences for my daughter are the most important benefits I embrace.
“I am also able to purchase appliances, utensils, pretty much anything the business needs without having to seek out a loan.”
The career educator said that one of her most recent accomplishments was packaging and sending a shipment of plum stew to the United Kingdom, to which she got rave reviews.
Williams said that so far her entrepreneurial journey has been one she wouldn’t change.
“I wouldn’t change anything or do anything differently. I use every opportunity as a lesson to learn from and make amends as I go along to provide the best quality service and products to customers,” she noted.
Williams encouraged budding entrepreneurs to have a passion for business and what they do; honesty; integrity; flexibility and determination. Additionally she said that they must have the drive to succeed while understanding that failure is a part of the game.
