With the prospect of experiencing a different culture, a 17 year-old Mia Miller moved to the Republic of China, Taiwan to further her studies.
Miller, now 22, recently graduated from the Ming Chuan university with a Bachelor degree in International Business and Trade.
The Green Hill resident told ANN that she chose her field of study because she was confused about what educational direction she wanted.
“I was a bit confused about what educational direction I wanted to steer myself in for the future and business seemed like a safe bet, however after studying economics at GHS (St Vincent Girls High School) and again at the community college I realized I actually enjoyed learning about different economies and how the world worked.”
Miller added that she was always intrigued with international relations, thought she would be good at marketing products or a country’s assets, hence her concentration in Marketing and Human Resources management.
While she plans to further her studies, Miller said she is taking a year to work and learn Mandarin Chinese
She also plans to do a lot of traveling and growing before returning home.
She said that her time in Taiwan has been an interesting one.
“I imagine studying anywhere abroad would be difficult for most, but being on the literal other side of the world from my family, friends and most of all my Vincy food proved to be the most challenging,” Miller said.
She said however, that Taiwan is the place where she grew up and became and adult.
“I left St.Vincent when I was 17 years old and I had no idea how to live alone or take care of responsibilities without my moms help. I got the opportunity to meet some of the most amazing people from all over the world here and that experience was amazing.”
Miller noted that the relationships she has made has been the highlight of her time in Taiwan.
“All in all I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Taiwan. It was by no means easy or happy all the time but it molded me into the person I am today,” Miller said.
Her father, Haniff Miller, told ANN that Miller has always been ambitious and determined from an early age.
“Her success came as no surprise to me. I am especially proud of her work ethic and her desire to succeed. I have no doubt in my mind that she will continue to soar and I will always be here, as in the past to encourage and support her throughout her journey,”
He added that her graduation was “definitely a proud moment.”
