Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 21, 2023 (SKNIS): Clean, accessible water is critical to human health. As such, the government is embarking on several initiatives to address the water issues in St. Kitts and Nevis.

This was according to the Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, during a special interview on Friday, July 21, 2023, with members of the media dubbed “The Roundtable.”

“We are now going to roll out a water storage tank system and we are going to build a new desalination plant which was approved in the last Cabinet – a two (2) million-gallon desalination plant,” said Prime Minister Dr. Drew. “We are serious. People in St. Kitts and Nevis should have access to water, and in less than a year we have started drilling in Cayon; in less than a year we are rolling out storage tanks. For those who have it worst, we are going to give them tanks and at least we can fill them and that can last days for them at a time.”

Prime Minister Dr. Drew said the aim is to allow everyone to benefit directly.

“What we want to do is set up for example… a water company and allow the shares to be sold to our people – so our people own it. So, when you make your profit from it you can look forward to your dividend. We want to do that with a number of companies,” said the prime minister. “Can you imagine if you have shares in these companies and these companies grow over time and you are expecting your dividend once or twice yearly depending on the situation? That would bring passive income and help to build wealth for our people so that is where we want our investment, in things as basic as water and renewable energy.”

Prime Minister Dr. Drew said that these initiatives are critical in driving development in the twin-island Federation, as well as transforming St. Kitts and Nevis into a Sustainable Island State.
