Jeffery Cuffy, charged with assaulting a woman with whom he claimed he had a relationship, has been given until January 3 to verify his explanation to the Court. Until then, he is remanded to His Majesty’s prison.
The Akers resident has been charged with assaulting Sharon Diamond of La Croix causing her bodily harm. The offense was reportedly committed on November 7, 2023, at Fountain.
Cuffy is also charged with, that on December 2, 2023, at Peruvian Vale, did unlawfully and maliciously wound Winston Shallow of Sandy Bay.
He pleaded not guilty to the wounding charge, but on the assault charge, he told the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court that he would plea not guilty until the complainant showed up in Court, as he had a relationship with her, and he believes she is not interested in proceeding with the matter.
But Court Clerk Corporal Kenroy Martin told the Court that there was a bench warrant out for Cuffy since 2022, in relation to a charge of a similar nature.
Cuffy, however, explained that he used to show up in Court for that matter all the time, but the police told him that it was no longer in the system.
However, according to Corporal Martin, the police had to chase Cuffy from Belmont to Akers to catch him.
Cuffy, however, explained that he was once on a murder charge, and when he saw men dressed in black coming towards him, he did not know who they were and began to run. He stopped running when a woman told him that it was police chasing him. He said the police beat him up badly and did not take him to a doctor.
Senior Magistrate Colin John said he would remand Cuffy until January 3 to verify his story.
The Magistrate also assured him that he would get the officer dealing with the case to contact the complainant to find out whether she is still interested in the matter. The Magistrate also assured that he would ask the police to make arrangements for him to see a doctor.
Cuffy then told the Court that the police at the Mesopotamia Police Station, where he was taken into custody, took away his belongings, including $200, and now that he was going to prison on remand, he would need the money to buy toothpaste and soap.
The Magistrate again assured him that he would ask the police to deal with that.
