Vincentian athlete, Nickie Peters was inducted into the Coppin State University’s (CSU) Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2024 for his outstanding performance on the track and in cross country meets.
Peters has been described as a “four-year standout on the track and cross country.”
He won back-to-back Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Cross Country Individual Titles in 2001 and 2002 following up on his runner-up performance in 2000.
Peters also won five conference titles on the track, taking the indoor crown in the Mile in 2000 and 2001 and the 1,500 metres outdoors in 2002 and 2003 and was also victorious in the 800m at the outdoor championships in 2000 and earned all-conference honours in three other events.
The Vincentian athlete still owns CSU records in both the Mile and 1,500m and was part of three relays and still holds the record for the fastest time in school history.
In 2002, he represented his country, St Vincent and the Grenadines at the 2nd Quadrennial North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Under-25 Track and Field Championships in San Antonio, Texas.
He has had some misfortunes in that he failed to meet the established time for the 800m for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
However, he has demonstrated that he is as good in his academics as he was on the track and received two CoSIDA Academic All-America honours in both 2002 and 2003, becoming the only CSU athlete to win the award twice.
He went on to receive a Masters in Nuclear Physics from Indiana University and a PhD from the University of Missouri in Radiochemistry/Nuclear Engineering and presently works as a reactor specialist at the University of Missouri.
