The Ministry of Health continues its efforts against the rise of chronic non-communicable diseases, with a particular focus on Diabetes. Family Nurse Practitioner, Sister Roxanne Laidlow-Joseph, emphasized that while health professionals are dedicated to combating these conditions, health is a collective responsibility. She urged parents to address proper nutrition and physical activity to prevent Diabetes in children.

In an interview with the Agency for Public Information (API), Laidlow-Joseph highlighted a concerning trend of inactivity among children, which leads to unhealthy Body Mass Index (BMI) and weight. She stressed the prevalence of type 2 Diabetes and the importance of a preventative approach, encouraging parents to engage their children in regular exercise and healthy eating habits.

Laidlow-Joseph also advised the public to stay current with medical checkups, especially for those with a family history of Diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by the pancreas’s inability to produce enough insulin or the body’s ineffective use of the insulin produced.
