Kingstown, June 4, 2024 – In an impressive display of eloquence and intellect, the Port Elizabeth Chapter of the Bequia Police Youth Club orchestrated a captivating Public Speaking Competition on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the esteemed Bequia Anglican Primary School. Divided into three riveting segments, the event showcased the talents and ingenuity of the participants.
Under the theme “Can we normalize childhood, please?”, contestants tackled pressing societal issues in the first round. The second round unleashed their creativity as they delivered speeches on topics of their choice, while the final round demanded quick thinking and adaptability with impromptu speeches.
Emerging victorious from a pool of talented speakers, Aiden Dennie claimed the coveted title of Overall Winner, leaving an indelible mark with his articulate delivery and compelling arguments. Not to be outdone, Azarra Gordon and Kafiya Simmons secured second and third place, respectively, with their outstanding oratory skills.
Highlighting the essence of spontaneity, Isis Hutchins clinched the Best Impromptu Speech award, showcasing remarkable poise and wit under pressure. Azarra Gordon’s impassioned discourse earned her the distinction of delivering the Best Chosen Speech, while Aiden Dennie’s command over the given topic secured him the accolade for Best Given Topic.
The winners were duly rewarded for their exceptional performances, thanks to the generous contributions of the Bequia community:
- 1st Place: Samsung Galaxy Tablet, Trophy, and $50.00 EC
- 2nd Place: Chromebook, Trophy, and $40.00 EC
- 3rd Place: Notepad, Trophy, and $30.00 EC
- Best Impromptu Speech: Allowance at Jack’s Bar and Restaurant
- Best Chosen Speech: Dinner for two at Plantation Hotel
- Best Given Speech: Lunch for two at Spring Hotel
Graced by the presence of Sgt. Stephen Billy, National Coordinator of Police Youth Clubs, the event garnered praise for its role in nurturing the intellectual prowess of the nation’s youth. “The competition brought out the best in the children,” remarked Sgt. Billy. “This is one of the ways in which the police youth club is nurturing the minds of the young people of our nation. We have to constantly engage them and encourage them to be model citizens.”
