From July 27th to August 3rd, 2024, St. Vincent & the Grenadines will play host to the 2024 CBN/WINLOTT Windward Island School Games. In 2023, the games reinstated in Grenada after a 3 year hiatus, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The host country emerged winners.
This year, the location switches to St. Vincent & the Grenadines, where competitions will be held in Football, Track & Field, Netball, Volleyball and Basketball. The Division of Sport & Physical Activity, the chief entity in facilitating the games, along with the requisite sporting bodies, has named training squad, which will be cut to a final 62, by June 28th.
The games commence on Saturday, July 27th, with the official opening ceremony at 11 am, to be followed by the Track & Field competition, at 2 pm, at the Sir Vincent Beach National Stadium.
Following this, there will be 3 periods of matches per day in the various disciplines, with 2 matches in each period. The venues earmarked for these matches are the Kingstown Netball Center, Girls High School, Victoria Park and the New Montrose Basketball Complex.
Tuesday, July 30th has been dubbed “Chili Choozday”, where all matches for that day will be played at the Chili hard court and Chili playing field.
St. Vincent & the Grenadines finished fourth in the 2023 edition of the games.
On May 22nd & 23rd, a preparatory meeting of Coordinators of Sports of the 4 Windward Islands, was held here in St. Vincent 7 the Grenadines. In attendance were, Mr. Kerlon Peters of Grenada along with Mr. Clitus Jules and Wayne Benti of St. Lucia. Dominica’s Sports Coordinator, Mr. Trevor Shillingford was unable to attend. The meeting was chaired by SVG’s Acting Coordinator of Sport & Physical Activity, Ms. Semone Richardson.
The meeting heard a report on last year’s tournament from Mr. Peters, and the delegation was updated on plans for this year’s hosting. They also visited the proposed venues for an inspection of the state of readiness, of which they said they were satisfied.
This year will mark 110 years since the creation of the games, making it the oldest regional integration institution in the Caribbean.
