In an urgent appeal to the nation, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has called upon Vincentians with available guesthouses, apartments, and rooms to register with the Ministry of Tourism. This initiative aims to provide housing for displaced individuals from the Southern Grenadines, who are currently residing in emergency shelters.
Speaking on a radio broadcast Sunday, Dr. Gonsalves highlighted the pressing need for additional accommodations, stating that the current number of rooms is insufficient to meet the demand. He assured property owners that the government would cover all costs associated with housing the displaced individuals for as long as necessary.
“I am appealing to those with guesthouses and apartments to contact the Ministry of Tourism and register your available spaces,” urged the Prime Minister. “We need to show solidarity during this challenging time. Any repairs or damages that occur to your property will be taken care of by the government. I trust that those who are housed will respect and maintain the accommodations provided.”
Dr. Gonsalves also emphasized the importance of relocating displaced individuals from emergency shelters, many of which are schools, so that the Ministry of Education can conduct essential repairs before the upcoming school term. This relocation is crucial to ensure that educational facilities are ready to welcome students back in the best possible condition.
The Prime Minister’s call to action underscores the collaborative effort required to address the housing needs of displaced residents and restore normalcy to the affected communities.
