The Ministry of Education and National Reconciliation is stepping up its efforts to combat the ongoing Dengue Fever outbreak in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, working closely with the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and the Environment. The country has seen a sharp rise in Dengue cases since May 2024, with the situation officially declared an epidemic in July. As of August 22, 2024, there have been 542 confirmed cases across all health districts, with the highest numbers reported in Calliaqua, Kingstown, and Pembroke. Most affected individuals are within the 0-33 age group.
The Dengue virus, transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, primarily spreads through daytime bites, posing a significant risk in homes, workplaces, and schools. In response, the Ministry of Education has issued a series of measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus within educational institutions.
Schools are being urged to take immediate action to reduce mosquito breeding sites by eliminating stagnant water around school premises, properly covering stored water, and maintaining clean, bush-free surroundings. Additionally, the Ministry advises that students should be allowed to wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing and use insect repellents, with considerations for those with respiratory conditions.
To support ongoing public health efforts, schools are encouraged to cooperate with the Vector Control Unit by ensuring that school buildings are open during fogging operations. Furthermore, teachers of Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) are being asked to incorporate Dengue prevention strategies into their lessons.
In cases where students or staff are diagnosed with Dengue Fever, schools are required to report these instances to Health Nursing Supervisors promptly.
The Ministry of Education has reiterated its commitment to working closely with health authorities to safeguard the well-being of students and staff during this public health crisis. They also call on parents and guardians to play their part by educating their children on Dengue prevention and ensuring they follow the recommended precautions.
As the Dengue outbreak continues to unfold, the collective efforts of educational institutions, health authorities, and the public will be crucial in mitigating the spread of the virus across St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
