Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said the government remains committed to addressing the widespread impacts of Hurricane Beryl, while prioritizing critical infrastructure and services.
On a recent visit to the Grenadines, Dr. Gonsalves highlighted the repurposing of hospital facilities, the rebuilding of schools, and the ongoing efforts to enhance airport security and functionality as key areas of focus.
“The hospital and clinics had to be expanded and fortified. Schools like Mary Hutchinson and Stephanie Browne required near-total rebuilding. These projects are crucial for the communities’ recovery and their future resilience,” he stated.
The Prime Minister addressed questions regarding delays in fencing at the airport, emphasizing that resources had to be carefully allocated and sequenced to ensure the most urgent needs were met first.
“The terminal building is nearing completion, and we’ve had to secure the area with personnel from regional security forces. But priorities such as hospitals, schools, and preventing livestock from straying onto the runway had to take precedence,” Dr. Gonsalves explained.
To finance these efforts, the government has allocated $63 million in reconstruction funds from Hurricane Beryl recovery, with $10 million earmarked for critical bridgework in North Windward.
Dr. Gonsalves acknowledged the financial challenges posed by rising inflation and the need to raise additional resources but reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to completing these projects.
“Rebuilding the Southern Grenadines has been a monumental task. We’ve had to piece together resources and prioritize carefully, but the progress is undeniable,” said the Prime Minister. “This is part of the democratic process—answering tough questions and staying transparent with our people.”
