On January 13, 2024, a transformative workshop unfolded in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, bringing together over 100 early childhood and primary school teachers. The focus was on equipping educators with the skills to support children facing speech and language challenges. This initiative was a collaborative effort among Research England from the University of Reading, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, and the St. Vincent Autism Society.
Psychologist and organizer, Kimberly Cambridge, emphasized the workshop’s goal: to provide educators with essential knowledge and strategies to effectively support children with speech and language delays as they enter school. She highlighted that this event marked a vital step toward fostering inclusive education, ensuring all children receive the support they need.
Leading the sessions were Dr. Vishnu Nair and Dr. Emma Pagnamenta, both experienced speech and language therapists from the University of Reading. Dr. Nair, specializing in pediatric speech therapy for neurodiverse and autistic children, underscored the collaboration’s importance in raising awareness about communication disabilities. In addition to training teachers, they conducted workshops for families, providing valuable resources and strategies to support children with communication needs.
This workshop signifies a significant advancement in early childhood education within the region, promoting inclusivity and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.
