Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has refuted claims that his government financed the private jet for Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel’s visit to St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 2024.
In an interview with ANN, Dr. Gonsalves stated that Kartel’s lawyer contacted him, inquiring whether the Prime Minister would accommodate the artist if he were to come to SVG for medical treatment. Kartel was reportedly seeking specialized care for a rare illness, with specialists from Cuba and India involved.
Dr. Gonsalves clarified that while he agreed to facilitate the visit, no public funds were utilized. “Kartel came here, and the government didn’t spend a single cent—whether for accommodation, meals, or anything else,” he emphasized.
During an interview on the program Drink Champs, Kartel mentioned, “The Prime Minister of SVG invited me down, and private Jet and everything.” As the video gained traction online, Kartel issued a clarification, stating he had been misunderstood and that he personally financed his private jet travel because he is wealthy.
When asked about this subsequent clarification, Dr. Gonsalves indicated he was unaware of it, suggesting that “maybe someone brought to his attention.” He acknowledged that Kartel has many contacts in SVG following his visit.
Regarding the possibility of Kartel performing in SVG before the next election, Dr. Gonsalves responded, “You don’t expect me to answer that.” However, he noted that young people would love to see Kartel perform in the country again.
Vybz Kartel’s visit to St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 2024 attracted significant attention, especially after his release from prison and his disclosure of battling a rare illness. The artist shared various moments from his trip on social media, including interactions with local fans and dining with Prime Minister Gonsalves.
The Prime Minister described Kartel’s presence in SVG as a personal act of mercy, emphasizing the humanitarian aspect of accommodating the artist during his health challenges.
As discussions continue, the public remains keenly interested in the relationship between Vybz Kartel and the leadership of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, especially concerning potential future collaborations or performances.
