Students and teachers at the Girls’ High School (GHS) in St. Vincent and the Grenadines are reportedly battling a flea infestation, raising serious health and safety concerns. Major the Honourable St. Clair Leacock, representative for Central Kingstown, has criticized the government for its handling of the situation, calling it a “total shame and disgrace.”
Leacock claimed that teachers have been bitten by dogs and students affected by fleas, describing the conditions as unacceptable for one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious institutions. He argued that the issue reflects a broader failure by the government to prioritize education and maintain school infrastructure.
“This is not just about fleas; it’s about the blatant neglect of an institution with over 100 years of history,” Leacock stated. “To subject young minds to such conditions is a colossal failure on the part of the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Finance, Health, and Education.”
Leacock also highlighted structural concerns, noting that the GHS building may need to be demolished due to limestone deterioration. He criticized the government for what he described as a “guessing game” regarding repairs and accused them of speaking about projects without secured financing.
He further questioned the government’s planning, pointing out that temporary arrangements have been made for students, some of whom may never set foot in the historic building where many of the country’s brightest minds were educated. “There’s little respect shown to the legacy of this school,” he said.
Leacock also raised concerns about the Thomas Saunders Secondary School, stating that its structure is too weak to support an additional floor and may also face demolition. He questioned why the country’s best architects and engineers were not involved in addressing these issues.
“The government has overstayed its welcome,” he argued, emphasizing the need for immediate action. He pledged that an NDP government would prioritize the restoration of the GHS building and bring swift relief to students and teachers.
Leacock concluded by apologizing to all affected by the current situation, reiterating his commitment to resolving the issues if his party is elected.
