Major St. Clair Leacock, Member of Parliament and area representative, expressed confidence that the New Democratic Party (NDP) would win the upcoming elections and form the next government in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Speaking to Asberth News Network, Leacock emphasized the party’s strong chances, stating, “We should have been in office before if you look at the 2020 results. We have recovered the 10,000 votes lost since 2021, which makes me feel confident about this.”
Leacock highlighted the NDP’s readiness, noting, “As a party going into the elections, we have selected and announced all our candidates. This shows our readiness.” In contrast, he criticized the government for still going through the candidate selection process after being in office for over 20 years. He remarked, “It’s laughable that in Central, close to three months before the election, they don’t have a candidate to run against an opposition member. They have had to change candidates on every single occasion.”
Leacock also pointed out alleged manipulation by the government, stating, “To look at how bad they are, they have to manipulate the system by naming an Attorney General as a candidate, even though they always argued that they would choose a civil servant over a political Attorney General. Or to have two senior administrators at the hospital as candidates.” He also noted that the Southern Grenadines has yet to name a candidate, they had to change the law, adding, “We were told they are trying to manipulate the system with these so-called conferences and putting executives in place in an election year.”
Leacock expressed his confidence in the NDP’s success, saying, “I think the NDP is going to do extremely well in these elections. We have to focus on winning the constituencies because those who win the most constituencies win.” He specifically mentioned that he is confident the NDP will win in South Windward, North Leeward, Windward East, and East St. George. “It would have to be something catastrophic for the NDP to lose this election,” he concluded. “The reality is, all seats are marginal, so every seat is in play and can be won by the NDP.”
