The ULP has been in office for the last 25 years, and during that time, only one senator from the Southern Grenadines, Edwin Snagg, has served, from 2001 to 2005. This highlights a significant flaw in the ULP’s political strategy. Chevonne Stewart should be appointed as a senator to help rectify this oversight, as she can effectively advocate for the government’s accomplishments and current initiatives in the Grenadines. Her appointment would also be meaningful for the Stewart family and the people of Union.
Since Chevonne’s name has been mentioned as a potential ULP candidate for the Southern Grenadines, it has caused the NDP to react in a somewhat panicked manner. While I am not claiming that Chevonne will win, I am confident that she will perform better than the ULP’s best showing in the 2001 election. The ULP needs to put the NDP on the defensive in some of their strong areas, and the Southern Grenadines is one of those constituencies. Considering that the ULP has strong support in Union, they should harness that support and work to convince undecided voters to back the ULP. If the ULP wins the next general election but loses the popular vote, it could lead to protests similar to those in 2001 calling for fresh elections, and the opposition would have moral grounds to argue for that.
