BIABOU, St. Vincent – Mr. Darron Rodan John, a lecturer in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), has been selected as the Unity Labour Party’s (ULP) candidate for the South Windward constituency ahead of the next general elections.
John, 35, was nominated by South Windward Constituency Council Chairman Mr. Maurice Roberts during a candidate selection conference held on Saturday evening, July 20, at the Biabou Methodist School. His nomination will now be forwarded to the ULP’s Central Executive for formal ratification.
He is set to succeed the Honourable Frederick Augustus Stephenson, who has represented South Windward since 2010 and won three consecutive elections for the ULP. The party has held the seat continuously since 1994.
Mr. John, a resident of Biabou, currently lectures at the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC). He is recognised for his work in digital transformation and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He is also pursuing a PhD in Business Administration at the National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan, where his research focuses on technology adoption in financial services.
His selection follows internal party tensions, particularly surrounding the candidacy of Mr. Louis Daisley, who reportedly enjoyed significant support in the Stubbs area. Sources told ANN that Mr. Daisley was asked by the party leader to withdraw from the race on Monday, July 15. He was noticeably absent from Saturday’s selection conference.
Mr. John now faces the task of unifying party delegates in the constituency, many of whom were previously divided in their support. Building bridges, especially in Stubbs, will be crucial to solidifying his position ahead of the national vote.
He is expected to face Mr. Andrew John of the main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP), a retired educator.
The next general election is constitutionally due by February 2026, but many expect it to be called by late 2025.
