Eight independent newsrooms across the Caribbean are now better equipped to keep their communities informed during emergencies, thanks to the successful deployment of Emergency Media Kits by the Media Institute of the Caribbean (MIC), supported by the British Resident Commissioner to St Vincent and the Grenadines. The timely rollout comes ahead of the Atlantic hurricane season and signals a major step forward in strengthening regional media resilience.

In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, two news outlets—I Witness News and SVG Broadcasting—were selected to receive the advanced kits following a rigorous, needs-based application process. The selection was based on their editorial independence, public-interest mandate, audience reach, financial need, and their commitment to disaster preparedness and community engagement.

Each Emergency Media Kit includes essential equipment such as cameras, microphones, lights, laptops, hard drives, memory cards, and tripods. This initiative reflects the growing partnership between MIC and the British Resident Commissioner in Kingstown and reinforces their shared mission of defending press freedom and promoting democratic discourse—particularly within Small Island Developing States (SIDS) vulnerable to climate-induced disasters.

Kiran Maharaj, President of the Media Institute of the Caribbean, praised the collaboration, saying, “Our collaboration with the British Resident Commissioner in Kingstown truly elevates disaster readiness and reinforces the indispensable role of independent journalism in protecting lives and livelihoods across the Caribbean.”

Geoffrey Patton, Resident British Commissioner, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Upholding a free, resilient press remains central to our mission. Through this partnership, we are reinforcing the ability of newsrooms to serve their audiences at the most critical moments.”

The initiative supports ongoing efforts to bolster media sustainability, integrity, and public trust. With reliable information being most vital during times of crisis, the British High Commission and MIC extended their gratitude to all participating newsrooms for their dedication to transparent, accountable coverage across the region.
