The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Services is closely monitoring a strong tropical wave located about 390 miles (627 km) east of the Windward Islands, which could develop into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours.

In its 6:00 a.m. weather statement issued on Sunday, August 24th, the Met Services reported that the system is moving quickly westward at 20 to 25 mph and is expected to pass through the Windward and Leeward Islands later today or tonight. Current model guidance indicates a medium chance—around 40 percent—of development into a depression over the next two days and up to seven days.

Regardless of development, residents should brace for cloudy skies, moderate to heavy showers, and thunderstorms across St. Vincent and the Grenadines by Sunday evening. Strong winds associated with the system could also contribute to deteriorating sea conditions in the hours ahead.

The system is forecast to reach the central Caribbean by Tuesday, August 26th, when conditions are expected to become less favorable for further development. An Air Force reconnaissance aircraft has been placed on standby to investigate the system if necessary.

The Met Services cautioned that flash flood watches or warnings may be issued at short notice and strongly advised residents to remain informed on the system’s progress.
