The newly constructed Kingstown Port has received new equipment expected to significantly improve the efficiency of the facility. Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves unveiled the additions in a video on Tuesday, noting the expectation of faster turnaround times for incoming shipments.

Port Manager Carl James, who toured the facility alongside the Prime Minister, explained the different types of machines introduced. The new equipment includes scanners for containers, which are expected to assist customs with processing the contents being imported by reducing the need for lengthy manual searches. Officers will also receive training from the manufacturers on how to read and interpret the scanned images.

Other machines delivered include road sweepers, jockey trucks, low beds, pilot launchers, and forklifts, all of which will help improve operations and support importers in offloading their containers. Some of this equipment will also remain in use at the Campden Park Port to ensure efficiency across facilities. The CEO of the project noted that every supervisor and manager holds diplomas and is well trained to manage their fields.

In the interview, Prime Minister Gonsalves highlighted the importance of modernized equipment, high levels of training, and proper management of the port. He took the time to thank the managers of the Kingstown Port and credited Minister Carlos James as the driving force behind the changes currently being executed.

The Prime Minister also indicated that the transition to the new port will intensify over the coming weeks, as contractors have set October 24, 2025, as the official moving date. Completed sections of the project will be handed over gradually up to that date to ensure a smooth transition to the modernized facility.

When asked about the decision to have a young woman, Minister Benarva Brown, lead the project, Dr. Gonsalves described her as having “a good head on her shoulders,” praising her wisdom, willingness to listen to professionals, and openness to seeking help when needed.

The Kingstown Port is expected to strengthen trade and improve the handling of incoming goods, while also providing opportunities for growth in the tourism industry by allowing more ships to dock during the cruise season.
