Kingstown, St. Vincent – Tuesday, September 30, 2025 — Students and staff at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Global Campus St. Vincent and the Grenadines now have a more comfortable outdoor space, thanks to a generous donation from the General Employees’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited (GECCU).
On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, GECCU’s Marketing and Communication Manager, Mrs. Danny-Lee Francis, officially handed over four (4) wooden benches and three (3) tables with attached seating. The items, made from 100% greenheart wood, were branded with both GECCU and UWI Global Campus insignia.
Francis noted that the previous seating had been in use for some time and required replacement. She explained that GECCU saw it as part of its social responsibility to contribute to the comfort of students and the wider community.
“We saw the need for more quality seating and we provided 100% greenheart wood furnishing. This is our way of giving persons more comfort and showing them that they are appreciated,” Francis said. She added that as the nation’s largest credit union, GECCU’s presence on campus also serves as a reminder that financing is available to support tertiary education and other initiatives.
Highlighting the campus’s green space as an “oasis,” Francis emphasized the importance of creating more environmentally friendly recreational areas in Kingstown. “These spaces allow persons to sit, eat lunch, engage with study partners, or simply relax,” she said.
Head of Site at UWI Global Campus SVG, Dr. Resa Noel-McBarnett, expressed deep gratitude for the donation. “We are grateful to GECCU for choosing to make a difference through its donation to our institution and helping us make a positive impact on the community, including our students,” she said.
Dr. Noel-McBarnett also pointed out the strategic branding on the furnishings, which reinforces the partnership between GECCU and UWI Global Campus, and encouraged students and visitors to take good care of the new facilities.
