Kingstown, St. Vincent – October 2, 2025 –
The Indian community in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), along with members of the Diaspora, will on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, commemorate the 18th anniversary of Indian Heritage Day, a national observance first recognized by an Act of Parliament on March 26, 2007.

Indian Heritage Day recalls the historic events of October 7, 1882, when fifty Indians from the Argyle Estate marched barefoot to Kingstown to protest poor working and living conditions. Their action, led in defiance of estate manager Mr. McKenzie, brought their grievances directly to the Lieutenant Governor and resulted in improvements on the estates. The protest also set the foundation for Indians to later acquire land and build independent livelihoods.

The SVG Indian Heritage Foundation (SVGIHF), which has been at the forefront of preserving and promoting the community’s history, said this year’s observance is a moment to reflect on the hardships, struggles, and persistence of fore-parents, and to share their legacy with younger generations who are increasingly interested in tracing their roots.

Through initiatives such as “Conversations with our Elders” and “Conversations with Outstanding Persons of Indian Heritage in SVG and the Diaspora,” the Foundation has documented 27 personal stories from elders and achievers of Indian descent. Two new features—Mrs. Kay Bacchus Baptiste and Mr. Dennis Gaymes—will be released this year on YouTube and the Foundation’s website, www.svgihf.org.

The Foundation has also honoured 14 outstanding individuals over the years for their significant contributions to the success of the organization and the wider community.

As part of the celebrations, the SVGIHF is encouraging the public to take part by wearing Indian-inspired outfits and enjoying Indian cuisine on October 7. Photos and videos of outfits, food, and artefacts can be shared with Mr. Colvin Harry, PRO of the SVGIHF.
