Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines — Nurses attached to the Maternity Ward at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) say they are fearful for their lives as a section of the roof continues to deteriorate, causing debris to fall in their work area.
One nurse who spoke to Asberth News Network (ANN) on condition of anonymity said this is not the first time the issue has occurred.
> “This is the second time it’s happening. We reported the matter before and nothing was done. It has happened again recently, and our lives are at risk,” the nurse said.
According to the nurse, when staff members raised the issue with senior hospital administrators, they were told that a new hospital is coming soon.
> “When we asked what we should do in the meantime, the Administrator told us, ‘you can stay home if you wish.’ They have no respect for us and no appreciation for the work we do,” the frustrated nurse added.
A doctor who also spoke with ANN expressed concern about the situation, describing it as a serious health and safety hazard.
> “I wish it could be better because it’s not just uncomfortable — it’s a health hazard,” the doctor said.
The Milton Cato Memorial Hospital has faced repeated criticism over the years for deteriorating infrastructure and unsanitary conditions. Previous complaints have included leaking roofs, broken beds, and reports of rodents on the compound.
In July 2024, the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Taiwanese construction company OECC to begin the building of a new Modern Acute Care Hospital at Arnos Vale. The facility, expected to be completed within 32 months, will provide specialized services in cardiology, dialysis, and urology. Once operational, the MCMH is slated to be transformed into a maternal, child, and health center.
Efforts by ANN to reach the Hospital Administrator for comment were unsuccessful up to the time of publication
