Former Deputy Prime Minister Montgomery Daniel has accused the New Democratic Party (NDP) of collecting more taxes during its time in government but failing to deliver meaningful development for the people.
Speaking at a Unity Labour Party (ULP) meeting in Langley Park, Daniel claimed that while in office, the NDP collected over 40% in taxes, yet poverty increased, employment declined, and educational opportunities were limited.
“They didn’t build a single school,” Daniel said. “There were fewer scholarships, more poverty, and less hope.”
In contrast, Daniel highlighted the ULP’s record under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, stating that the government has reduced taxes from 40% to 27% over the past 24 years, with plans to bring it further down to 26%.
“This means the government has been reducing taxes to put more money in your pocket,” he said to the large crowd.
Daniel also noted significant improvements in education and poverty reduction. “When we came to office, poverty stood at 27%; today, it’s at 3%. Scholarships have increased from just four under the NDP to over 1,000 under the ULP,” he stated.
He added that over 150 students from North Windward are currently studying at universities around the world — a direct result of ULP’s education policies.
“When we took office, the basic wage was just $20. Today, it’s $56 — and it will increase again next year,” Daniel announced to loud applause.
Daniel said he is pleased with the work he has done over the past 24 years, noting his contributions to housing, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and the Lives to Live programme. He thanked the people of North Windward for their continued trust and support over the years.
In closing, Daniel urged the constituency to support Dr. Grace Walters, the current ULP candidate for North Windward, and to return her as their representative in the next general election.
