Former Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, longtime leader of the Unity Labour Party (ULP), has announced that he will take up the role of Opposition Leader following his party’s crushing defeat in the November 27th, 2025 general election. The New Democratic Party (NDP) secured a landslide victory, winning 14 of the 15 parliamentary seats. Dr. Gonsalves was the sole ULP candidate to retain his seat, ending the party’s 25-year hold on government since first being elected in 2001.
Despite the loss, Dr. Gonsalves declared that “Labour is strong and alive,” signaling his intention to keep the party active and united. He confirmed that he will meet with the ULP executive tomorrow to decide on the two senators who will join him on the opposition benches in Parliament.
Notably, Dr. Gonsalves has not yet issued a public congratulatory message to the NDP on their victory.
