VIENNA (AP) — Gunmen opened fire on people enjoying a last night out at Vienna’s cafes and restaurants before a coronavirus lockdown Monday in what authorities said was a terror attack that left at least two dead — including one of the assailants — and 15 wounded. “We are victims of a despicable terror attack in the federal capital that is still ongoing,” Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said hours after the gunfire erupted. “One of the perpetrators was neutralized, but several perpetrators appear to still be on the loose,” he said. “They seem to also, as far as we know,…
CARACAS, Venezuela (AFP) — Campaigning for next month’s parliamentary election begins in Venezuela on Tuesday with President Nicolas Maduro looking to take back control of the National Assembly, whose speaker and opposition leader Juan Guaido is demanding a boycott. Guaido has already denounced the December 6 election as a “fraud” while the United States, European Union and Organization of American States (OAS) have all voiced their concerns. The opposition leader’s main gripe is that Venezuela’s regime-loyalist Supreme Court appointed officials to the top electoral body ahead of the vote when that role should be performed by parliament. The National…
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has sought to distance his administration from a Cabinet minister, amid claims of the person being accused of rape. “What I’ll say at this point, I have not been able to verify the veracity of the claim, but if indeed it’s a serious issue and it’s before the Crime Unit, then clearly, the Minister involved knows exactly what to do,” Prime Minister Browne said on his weekend radio programme. “The Minister would be aware of the governance framework of my administration. Where you have such allegations and there is an active investigation, then the minister has…

I was greatly disappointed when our January 22nd Discovery Day was discontinued because Columbus never came to St. Vincent. It was our only holiday in January and we always looked forward to it. I will not be surprised if a new holiday is instituted because his descendants are here exhibiting the same kind of behavior. Many years ago, scoundrels, and thieves, some of whom might have been let out of prison, sailed west from their European colonial homes and stumbled on our Blessed Hairouna. From the very beginning they sought to dispossess the citizens of their land. They took ownership…

by Vaughan Toney I was listening recently to the Prime Minister’s presentation of his Unity Labor Party’s Election Manifesto when, at the end of his remarks, he announced that “this will be the last time I will be presenting a manifesto as your Prime Minister.” His words were accompanied by the song ‘Would you Stand by Me’ in the background. The people in the room were visibly moved: many were brought to tears and one young woman was practically inconsolable as she sobbed while saying repeatedly, “I love my PM! I love my PM! I love my PM!” I, too,…
