ANN was reliably informed that the St Vincent and the Grenadines Teachers’ Union (SVGTU) returned the T-shirts that were provided by National labour Congress for the March and Rally organized for the Labour day on May 1st, 2019 .
ANN contacted Wendy Bynoe, President of the SVGTU for an update on such a decision. The President informed ANN that”A decision was made by the General Council for the SVGTU not to participate in the activities put on by the “National Labour Congress”.
Pursuant to a decision taken at the 19th Biennial Convention of the SVG Teachers’ Union, all delegates to the National Labour Congress (NLC) were recalled.
The SVGTU sent communiqués dated May 17, 2016 and September 27, 2018 to the President of the NLC. Additionally, the Constitution of the National Labour Congress of St Vincent and the Grenadines states “The Machinery of the Congress shall consist of:
1. Annual Delegates Conference”. This Conference has not taken place since 2014. Efforts to realise a proper functioning of the NLC have proved futile.
The SVGTU is therefore of the opinion that the NLC is not a legitimate body and is unconstitutional.
The SVGTU is also of the opinion that the NLC has no authority to organize such an activity. Hence, the SVGTU will not give legitimacy to the NLC by taking part.”
