(NEWS ROOM GUYANA) —  A man who was arrested by Police on Saturday following allegations of rape was found dead on Sunday morning in his cell at the Whim Police Station in East Berbcie Corentyne district.

While an investigation has been launched, the News Room understands that 37-year-old Courtney Persaud was sharing the cell with approximately three other prisoners.

It is alleged that Persaud used the T-shirt he was wearing to hang himself while the other inmates slept. He was found motionless at around 06:00hrs by Police officers who went to check on the prisoners.

Persaud fled his home in Georgetown after a report was made to the Police that he raped a minor and impregnated her.

It is alleged that Persaud abused the minor for many years.

He was arrested by Police on Saturday afternoon in a community on the Corentyne Coast.
