Young netballers will have another opportunity to display and refine their skills.
This comes with their participation in the inaugural Kingstown Co-operative Credit Union Ltd./General Employees’ Co-operative Credit Union Ltd. Inter RSVG Police Youth Club Championship.
The Championship got going last Sunday, March 11, at the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Natasha Baptiste, President of the SVG Netball Association (SVGNA), praised the RSVG Police Force and its Police Youth Club structure, for their vision to host such a tournament.
Baptiste assured that her Association is committed to work with all stakeholders to continue the development of netball in the country.
She gave special mention to the challenge faced in attracting persons to serve as game officials (umpires) and table officials.
‘We are working hard to ensure that we develop and train our umpires and table officials and all who are involved, to ensure we see netball on the rise again,” Baptiste told Sunday’s gathering.
Frederick Stephens, Minister of Sports, recognized the Police Youth Club as “doing a wonderful job filling the void after the National Youth Council left many years ago, by organizing tournaments like this to make sure the young people get the opportunity to be involved in sports in the country.”
Teams from Layou, New Montrose, Spring Village, Georgetown, Diamonds, Richland Park, Chateaubelair, Fancy, South Rivers, Stubbs Police Youth Clubs will participate in the tournament.
Sandy Bay Youth Club was adjudged the best dressed team during the march pass.
The Police Youth Club is geared towards molding young people into becoming law-abiding citizen and good human beings. Sports is but one means towards this end.
It was noted, however, that the success of the Police Youth Clubs was contingent upon the level of support they receive from within their communities.
