Marlon Bute, the founder of District Stairs SVG Ltd, has contributed to Edwards’ French Classes, enabling a group of students from the Saint Vincent Grammar school to participate in a French educational field trip to Martinique from April 3rd to April 12th.
This initiative is part of Mr. Bute’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities and highlighting the importance of learning foreign languages through cultural immersion.
Three decades after participating in a similar exchange program to Guadeloupe, Mr. Bute’s experiences have shaped his view on the importance of language learning and cultural exchange. His journey with the French language extended into his teaching career, where he led student groups to Martinique and Guadeloupe and where he participated in several French teaching workshops, enriching both his and his students’ understanding of the language and cultures.
Mr. Bute’s academic path also included studies at L’Université des Antilles et de la Guyane in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe. Reflecting on the value of learning a foreign language, Mr. Bute noted, “Learning a foreign language facilitates a deeper understanding of different cultures, enhances cognitive and social skills, and is a key aspect of comprehensive education.”
The donation aims to afford students the opportunity to enhance their language proficiency and cultural comprehension during their stay in Martinique.
Ms. Tommico Edwards, graduate French teacher trained in teaching French as a second language and tutor of the students, is accompanying them on this important trip. Ms. Edwards, who is also a former student of Marlon Bute at the SVG Community College, expressed gratitude for the donation. She highlighted the significance of this trip in broadening students’ horizons and deepening their engagement with the French language and culture.
Edwards’ French Classes and by extension, the Saint Vincent Grammar School acknowledge Marlon Bute’s contribution, recognizing its impact on enriching student education and promoting global cultural awareness.
