Plans are well underway for the annual Carriacou Corn Festival, the island’s premier culinary event celebrating one of its most cherished staples. After being forced to skip last year’s festival due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl, the festival returns this year under the theme “Discover and Relish Corn’s Goodness.”
Since its inception in 2015, the Corn Festival has showcased the island’s rich culinary traditions and corn-based products, including coo-coo, corn bread, corn cake, conkie (‘paime’), corn porridge, and corn-kebabs.
Festival coordinators Dexter Lendore and Dexter Leggard highlighted the challenges of bouncing back from last year’s hurricane:
> “While we strive to build on the successes of previous festivals, Hurricane Beryl caused considerable damage, leading to the loss of nearly all our inventory and rendering our usual venue, The Coconut Beach Bar, unusable. Nonetheless, we are dedicated to improving the festival experience and are introducing new activities to make the 2025 edition special.”
This year’s festival will be hosted at a new venue – the Hillsborough Botanical Gardens – and will include cultural showcases such as Carriacou string band music, celebrating the island’s heritage alongside its culinary delights.
The event aims to foster community togetherness while promoting the versatility of corn, a staple enjoyed by the island’s ancestors and a traditional feature in local dishes like “Saraca” smoked foods. Organizers hope that the festival will solidify its place on Grenada’s cultural calendar, highlighting the island’s growing reputation as a culinary capital of the Caribbean.
