Kingstown St. Vincent April 13, 2024– On the New Democratic Part (NDP) New Times program, Senator Lavern King demanded answers about the location and operations of the Opposition Leader’s office, questioning whether Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has been conducting official meetings with foreign diplomats from his private residence despite receiving $153,000 annually in state funds to maintain an office and staff.
Responding on his Good Morning Comrade radio program, Dr. Gonsalves dismissed the concerns as “infantile,” clarifying that the Office of the Leader of the Opposition is located in a new building within the Unity Labour Party complex, staffed by research officer Mr. Ferdinand, and regularly open for meetings on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
He defended hosting visitors at his residence, describing it as a suitable venue with a “well-appointed library,” and noted that diplomats, including representatives from the American Embassy, have met with him there without issue. Gonsalves argued that critics were exaggerating by suggesting he was “running a government in exile,” insisting that both his official office and his home serve as legitimate venues for meetings. The exchange highlights ongoing political tensions, with King pressing for transparency and accountability while Gonsalves maintains that his arrangements are both practical and appropriate.
