Senator Lavern King delivered a pointed pitch to the Vincentian diaspora in London this week, using the UK leg of the Invest SVG investment tour to call on overseas nationals to move from sentiment to structure in how they engage with home.

Speaking under the tour’s theme “Home Is Where the Heart Is,” Senator King told the London audience that the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines views the diaspora not as an afterthought in national development, but as an active partner whose knowledge, networks, and experience are as valuable as financial capital.

A NEW PITCH: MID-SIZED INVESTMENT IN LOCAL BUSINESSES

The most striking element of the Senator’s address was a deliberate reframing of what diaspora investment can look like. Moving away from the conventional focus on large capital projects, Senator King highlighted a middle lane: scalable local businesses that are ready for growth but need a partner.

“An investment of around one hundred thousand Eastern Caribbean dollars could make a meaningful difference in helping that business expand production, strengthen packaging and standards, improve distribution, or prepare for export,” she told the audience.

The Senator framed Invest SVG as the practical bridge between diaspora interest and structured action — matching Vincentians abroad with stable, growth-ready businesses at home across sectors including agriculture, agro-processing, fisheries, the blue economy, tourism, creative enterprise, and digital services.

    MODERNISING DIASPORA ENGAGEMENT

Senator King acknowledged that stronger diaspora engagement requires the Government to make engagement “easier, clearer, and more practical,” pointing to ongoing work on digital systems and improved access to information, public services, and investment pathways.

She also called for stronger connection between overseas Vincentians and youth at home, citing mentorship, internships, and professional guidance as tools for widening the horizons of young Vincentians and building the confidence and networks needed for a modern global economy.

    THE CORE MESSAGE

Closing her address, the Senator told the London audience: “Home is where the heart is. But home must also be where opportunity lives.”

It was a message aimed squarely at converting diaspora affection into durable economic partnership — and at positioning Invest SVG as the institutional anchor for that conversion.
