KINGSTOWN, April 21, 2026 – St. Vincent and the Grenadines will celebrate forty‑nine years of Fisherman’s Day with a wide‑ranging program of activities that highlight the cultural, economic, and community significance of the fishing industry.
Senior Fisheries Officer Ferique Shotte of the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine and Land Conservation and Climate Resilience underscored the importance of the observance, noting that it commemorates the enduring spirit of the nation’s fishing community. The program begins on April 24 with exhibitions of local fish and value‑added products, followed by the popular Fish Fest in Barrouallie. Other highlights include male and female filleting competitions at the Kingstown Fish Market on May 15, and a school cooking competition on May 18-19 featuring fish dishes and sea moss drinks.
The celebrations also extend to community service and educational initiatives. On May 16, volunteers will participate in an Operation Beach Cleanup at Lowmans Bay, while church services will be held in respective communities on May 17. A radio talk show on May 18 and a safety lecture by the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) at Lowmans Bay on May 19 will focus on fish safety and disaster preparedness. Health screenings for blood pressure and sugar levels are scheduled for May 28 at the Kingstown Fish Market, and a family‑oriented fun day with food, games, and entertainment will take place at Lowmans Bay on May 23.
This year’s observance is being held under the theme “The Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future”, with the slogan “Healthy Fish, Tasty Dish.” Local fishing co‑operatives, including the Goodwill Fisherman’s Co‑op, are expected to play a central role in the activities.
Officials encourage the public to support the events, which not only celebrate the fishing industry’s contributions but also promote health, safety, and environmental awareness as the nation approaches the fiftieth anniversary of Fisherman’s Day.
