Kingstown, St. Vincent, April 21, 2026-Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday told the House of Assembly that the Government will not move forward with proposed amendments to the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act until there has been full public debate. He described the reforms as matters of national importance requiring wide engagement. Draft legislation has already been prepared, but Dr. Friday said the process will be paused until public responses are received.
The Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill 2026 and the Constitution of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (Amendment) Bill 2026 were listed on the Order Paper for Parliament’s April 21 sitting. Opposition Leader Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has already signaled resistance, warning that the government’s intended move could undermine the Constitution and judiciary, and pledged a multi-pronged pushback if the Bills proceed.
