The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) Counseling Department hosted a “Psychology Career Spotlight” webinar on Thursday, 23 April 2026, in recognition of World Psychology Day. Moderated by SVGCC Counselor and Psychologist, Mrs. Andrea Gaymes-Mohess, the webinar brought together students, educators, and regional practitioners for an engaging discussion on career pathways within psychology.
Opening the session, Ms. Tracey Wright, Lecturer in Psychology at the Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies (DASGS), provided an overview of the structure of the Associate Degree in Psychology programme offered by SVGCC.
Dr. Mia Amour-Jules, Clinical Psychologist, President of the Barbados Society of Psychology (BSP), and Senior Lecturer at the University of the West Indies (UWI), emphasized the critical need for Caribbean-centered research, noting that the region must move away from “importing” scientific models and instead develop its own knowledge base. She also urged attendees to maintain an open mind to the diverse opportunities available within the field.
Mr. Idrees Hosein, Counseling Psychologist and Treasurer of the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Psychologists (TTAP), shared perspectives on the diverse applications of psychology, ranging from forensic psychology in correctional settings to organizational psychology in the energy sector. He further encouraged students to begin their professional journeys early by engaging in volunteerism and research.
A question-and-answer segment followed the presentations, allowing participants to actively engage with the speakers.
The webinar was well attended and highlighted the growth of psychology in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It also underscored the College’s contribution to advancing the discipline, from the introduction of the subject at the A-level to its transition into the Associate Degree programme. Additionally, the College operates a fully functional Counseling Department which serves its students, staff, and their families.
