Residents of Troumaca and surrounding communities will have an opportunity to weigh in on proposed development plans for Troumaca Bay during a community consultation scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, under the Unleashing the Blue Economy of the Caribbean (UBEC) Project.

According to a public service announcement issued through the Agency for Public Information, the consultation is being organized by the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of the UBEC Project in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Sustainable Development, the Fisheries Ministry, the Solid Waste Management Unit, and the National Parks, Rivers and Beaches Authority.

The meeting is set to take place at 4:00 p.m. at the Troumaca Government School and will focus on proposed fisheries and tourism-related development plans for Troumaca Bay.

Residents, stakeholders, and community members have been invited to participate in the consultation process as government agencies continue efforts to advance sustainable coastal and marine development initiatives in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The UBEC programme is a multi-country initiative funded by the World Bank and implemented in partnership with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The project supports sustainable development across several Eastern Caribbean countries, including St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Saint Lucia.

The initiative focuses on strengthening what is known as the “blue economy”  the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources to generate economic growth, improve livelihoods, create jobs, and protect marine ecosystems. Key sectors targeted under the programme include tourism, fisheries, coastal resilience, and marine waste management.

In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the UBEC programme forms part of wider national efforts to strengthen climate resilience and promote sustainable economic development, particularly within coastal communities that depend heavily on marine resources and tourism activity.

The World Bank previously approved US$15 million in financing for SVG under the regional UBEC initiative, aimed at supporting investments in fisheries, tourism infrastructure, waste management, and small business development connected to the blue economy sector. ([World Bank

Regional officials have also emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement throughout the implementation of UBEC projects to ensure community participation and alignment with local development priorities.

The upcoming Troumaca consultation is expected to provide residents with details on the proposed development plans while allowing community members to offer feedback and recommendations before implementation moves forward.
