Kingstown, St. Vincent, May 15, 2026 – Consumers in St Vincent and the Grenadines are expected to benefit from lower fish prices later this month as part of activities celebrating the 49th anniversary of Fisherman’s Day.

Organizers say fishermen will offer several popular fish species at discounted prices during an event at the Kingstown Fish Market on 25 May, in an effort to make seafood more accessible to the public while encouraging support for the local fishing industry.

Senior Fisheries Officer and Fisherman’s Day Coordinator Ferique Shortte said discussions with management at the Kingstown Fish Market had resulted in the waiver of several fees normally paid by vendors.
“We’ve spoken to the management of the Kingston Fish Market, and they have agreed to waive the landing toll, the scale fee, and stall fee that vendors usually pay daily,” Mr Shortte told SVGTV News.
He said removing those charges would allow fishermen to lower prices for customers.

“What we want is for the fishermen to sell their fish directly to the public at the market price,” he added.

According to organizers, dolphin, kingfish and marlin are expected to sell for about EC$9 per pound, while tuna varieties such as yellowfin, blackfin and albacore are expected to retail at around EC$8 per pound.

Mr Shortte noted that the reduced rates were below the prices consumers would normally encounter.
“Regular price is up to EC$12, as much as EC$15 per pound in certain places,” he said.
The fish sale forms part of a wider programme of activities being held from 24 April to 25 May under the theme: “Right Food for a Better Future”, with the slogan “Health Fish, Tasty Dish”.

Fisherman’s Day is celebrated annually in St Vincent and the Grenadines in recognition of the contribution made by fishers and coastal communities to employment, food security and the wider economy.
