Union Island Airport officially reopened on Thursday, May 28, 2026, restoring a key air link for residents, visitors and businesses in the southern Grenadines.
The reopening was announced in a social media post, which described the development as a major step toward restoring seamless connectivity, boosting local tourism and supporting the Union Island community.
The airport had been temporarily closed from April 30 to May 16 to facilitate runway maintenance works. SVG Air said at the time that the closure was necessary to extend the operational life of the runway and ensure the continued safety of flight operations.
The reopening also comes as Union Island continues its wider recovery from Hurricane Beryl, which caused severe damage across the southern Grenadines in July 2024. Government damage assessments after the storm reported that Union Island Airport suffered moderate damage, including damage to the control tower roof and terminal roof, and was not open to commercial air traffic at the time.
The return of airport operations is expected to improve access for residents, business travellers and visitors, while also supporting tourism recovery across Union Island and nearby Grenadine destinations.
Stakeholders praised the teams involved in bringing the runway back into service and said the airport’s reopening signals another important step in rebuilding confidence and movement across the Grenadines.
With the airport now back in operation, travellers heading to Union Island for business, family visits or leisure are once again being welcomed back to the skies.
