The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has defended its decision to deny entry to 17 Nigerian nationals, stating that the move was taken on the advice of health authorities amid heightened international concern over Ebola.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 26, the government said the decision was made in accordance with its responsibility to protect public health and was not taken lightly.
The nationals arrived in the Federation on regional airline flights but were denied entry following consultations with the country’s competent health authorities.
According to the government, the decision was influenced by a recent risk assessment issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), which identified Nigeria as being at high risk of Ebola importation due to ongoing transmission in parts of Africa and the movement of travelers through major international transport hubs.
Officials noted that while Nigeria has not recorded any confirmed Ebola cases linked to the current outbreak, the advisory highlighted the need for increased vigilance and preparedness.
“This decision was not taken lightly,” the government said. “It was made on the advice of the competent health authorities, in keeping with our national responsibility to protect public health during a period of heightened global concern regarding Ebola.”
The government stressed that the measure was a public health precaution and not a reflection of its relationship with Nigeria.
“Saint Kitts and Nevis has always valued its warm and respectful relationship with the people of Nigeria,” the statement said. “We remain a welcoming nation, and we deeply regret any inconvenience or distress caused to our Nigerian brothers and sisters affected by this necessary public health measure.”
Authorities said their foremost responsibility is to act with caution and in accordance with health guidance while ensuring that all persons are treated with dignity and respect.
The government also urged travelers and residents to comply fully with national laws and public health measures to ensure the smooth implementation of the policy.
Officials expressed hope that the global health situation would be brought under control quickly, allowing normal travel arrangements and international engagement to resume as soon as possible.
