The United Nations Resident Coordinator of the U.N Sub-regional Office for Barbados and OECS, Didier Trebucq, presented Letters of Credence to Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves earlier this week. Mr. Trebucq arrived in Barbados in January this year, to assume duties as the Resident Coordinator and Designated Official for Security, on behalf of the United Nations System. Minister of Agriculture, Saboto Caesar says the Government continues to strengthen its Agri Export Strategy Initiative. He made this statement during yesterday’s ceremony which was held for the Government to sign an agreement with Rainforest Seafoods, which is the region’s largest processor and supplier of premium quality seafood. For the project approximately nine million dollars will be invested here for the establishment of a Fish Processing Plant at Calliaqua. The project is expected to become operational within the next 12 to 18 months.

On May 3rd the Electoral Office will be holding a Public Sensitization program in Kingstown. The program will be held at the Space which was formerly the Old Treasury Building. Deputy Supervisor of Elections, Sylvester King says objective of the event will be to sensitize members of the public about the Electoral Office and its work. A twenty-year-old St Vincent national arrested moments after disembarking the inter-island ferry (Osprey Line) on the sister isle of Carriacou last Monday has been remanded to the Richmond Hill Prison. Paval Patterson whose address was given as Chateau Belair in St Vincent was denied bail as he made his first appearance before Magistrate Taheria Gellineau at the #2 Magistrate Court in St George’s on Wednesday on a single charge of money laundering. The Inland Revenue Department has been challenged to pay greater attention to its Revenue Collection measures. The challenge was issued by Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves while contributing to the debate on the Income Tax Amendment Bill in Parliament last week. Prime Minister Gonsalves, the Government has taken a number of initiatives to reduce taxes and put certain measures in place to make the tax system more efficient. However, he expressed disappointment with the collection of taxes by the Inland Revenue Department.
