LOS ANGELES (AP) — A fast-moving wildfire forced evacuation orders for 70,000 people and seriously injured two firefighters in Southern California on Monday as powerful winds across the state prompted power to be cut to hundreds of thousands to prevent utility equipment from sparking new blazes. The smoky fire exploded in size to over 6 square miles (16 square kilometers) within a few hours of breaking out around dawn in Orange County, south of Los Angeles. Strong gusts pushed flames along brushy ridges in Silverado Canyon and near houses in the sprawling city of Irvine, home to about 280,000 residents.…

BEIJING, China (AFP) — China tightened the rules on a number of US media outlets on Monday, in a move it said was “necessary and reciprocal” after Chinese journalists in America were hit with restrictions last week. The world’s two largest economies, sparring over issues from trade and technology to human rights, have restricted visas for each other’s reporters, while China has expelled journalists. After the US declared several more Chinese media outlets to be “foreign missions”, Beijing late Monday demanded that six US media groups report to the government about their staffing, finances and real estate. They included the…

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves is becoming increasingly less tolerant of criticisms that his near twenty-year administration has done nothing for the development of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The man who is the longest serving Prime Minister in the history of the country has taken a fondness of using a glass analogy to demonstrate what he claims is a deliberate manipulation of his party’s record of achievement. He has surmised that he came and met the glass empty in 2001, filled it up with water [projects, policies and programs], has taken it above the three-quarters mark but the opposition…
