The surging coronavirus is taking an increasingly dire toll across the U.S. just as a vaccine appears close at hand, with the country now averaging over 1,300 COVID-19 deaths per day — the highest level since the calamitous spring in and around New York City. The overall U.S. death toll has reached about 254,000, by far the most in the world. Confirmed infections have eclipsed more than 11.8 million, after the biggest one-day gain on record Thursday — almost 188,000. And the number of people in the hospital with COVID-19 hit another all-time high at more than 80,000. With health…

Pfizer formally asked U.S. regulators Friday to allow emergency use of its COVID-19 vaccine, starting the clock on a process that could bring limited first shots as early as next month and eventually an end to the pandemic — but not until after a long, hard winter. The action comes days after Pfizer Inc. and its German partner BioNTech announced that its vaccine appears 95% effective at preventing mild to severe COVID-19 disease in a large, ongoing study. The companies said that protection plus a good safety record means the vaccine should qualify for emergency use authorization, something the Food…
A tropical wave is crossing the islands and a few scattered showers can be expected across St. Vincent and the Grenadines tonight. A low-level shear-line is expected to maintain unstable conditions with light to moderate rain and pockets of heavy showers by Saturday afternoon. Reduced shower activity is expected during the night, as the shear-line drifts southward across our islands. Isolated showers may linger across SVG on Sunday and a few showers are likely again by evening. Patches of Saharan dust linger across our area, occasionally creating slight hazy conditions. Fresh to occasionally strong (~30 – 45 km/h) easterly breeze…
After decades of neglect and misrepresentation from administration after administration, the people of North Leeward reached a boiling point and exploded with discontent and resentment for politicians. This was made manifest by the fact that many of them stayed away from the recent poll – refusing to vote for egotistical, vainglorious politicians. The people, often classified as backward, had had enough of the chicanery, and baseless promises made every 5 years, and said to the con-artist politician that the time was long overdue for them to make good on the promises. Therefore, our so-called honorable politicians should know that the…

Four swimmers copped double titles when the St Vincent and the Grenadines Swimming Federation hosted the OECS Swimming Championships last weekend at the Shrewsbury Aquatic Center. Participation in the Championship was limited to St. Vincent and the Grenadines since the other territories were unable to attend, given the various restrictive health protocols that are in place consequent upon the coronavirus pandemic. Notwithstanding, Belle Adams, Jadon Hamilton, Brandon George and Mya De Freitas were their respective age groups individual champions, and added the Sprint Champions’ titles to their names. Adams won both titles in the Females 8 and Under, with Hamilton…
Fri, Nov 20, 2020 Introduction The just concluded General Elections were extremely competitive, yet again confirming that our democracy though young, is an institution that functions efficaciously even if not absolutely flawless. After all, we live in the realm of humans and not gods. Our electorate displayed political maturity, sense and sensibility in putting the fate of the country ahead of party preference. Consequently, it returned the Unity Labour Party (ULP) to governance for an unprecedented fifth term with an increase in seats! We salute this wisdom. We are very grateful that the country has again reposed confidence in our…
Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has addressed the matter of promotion within the RSVG Police Force, following concerns expressed about the process. Two days before the Nov. 05 general election, the Police Service Commission green lighted the promotion of forty-seven (47) Police Officers. Among those posts to which officers were promoted were Assistant Commissioner of Police, Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent and Inspectors of Police. There had been some less than supportive statements by opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) executive members, but there was no response by government until after the general election. Dr. Gonslaves, speaking at…
As leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), the largest political party in SVG, I speak to you solemnly and sincerely about the state of affairs in our beloved country. A crisis in governance exists in our nation following the general elections that were held on November 5th. You, the people of our nation spoke during the election. More of you voted for the NDP than voted for the ULP. You gave the popular mandate to the NDP. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support, and for your confidence in us. By your vote, you…
For years, nurses have been complaining about working conditions but their cries have been falling on deaf ears. Now, soon after ANN published some of the concerns and the public started reacting, nursing authorities have started responding in what appears to be a move to address those concerns. A number of nurses have been pressing demand for an increase from one to two nights off per week as they complain of being burnt out. The nurses have complained that sometimes because of tiredness only one nurse might show up to work on a ward where five nurses should be working.…
