LIAT‘s commercial passenger services will remain suspended until 30th June 2020, due to the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Julie Reifer-Jones reported that most of LIAT’s network remains closed to commercial passenger traffic. While some territories have announced a reopening date, there are still many protocols to be implemented, such as testing and mandatory quarantine periods, which will allow for the safe movement of passengers. The inaugural Promotion of Youth Microenterprises (PYRME) grants were awarded last week Tuesday. Some 81 persons spanning over 50 villages across St. Vincent and the Grenadines received financial support for their businesses. Persons were granted capital investments ranging from XCD2500 up to XCD40, 000 the maximum allowed under the programme. Keswert Slater, a 39-year-old male employed with C.K. Greaves and Company Ltd as a Customs Broker, has been charged with the theft of over EC$63,000 from the Company. The Clare Valley man is charged with stealing EC$44,664.90 in cash from the Company between May 4, 2019 and December 31, 2019. Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne, on Monday, stressed the right of detained persons to a phone call, especially in relation to seeking legal advice. The Magistrate made the point when two men facing marijuana charges at the Serious Offences Court, revealed that they were denied the opportunity to make phone calls while in custody. St. Vincent and the Grenadines today recorded its 26th case of COVID-19, following the receipt of one hundred and fourteen (114) PCR results sent from the Caribbean Public Health Agency – CARPHA. This new case is one of the Vincentian Crew members being repatriated on the RCCL Vision of the Seas. There are now just two Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Crew members repatriated on the Vision of the Seas, without PCR results. These results should be received by Saturday, May 30. RCCL Crew members who tested negative on PCR will be allowed to disembark and continue strict quarantine at home.…
(LOOP NEWS CARIBBEAN) – Four Caribbean countries will receive a total of US$159 million in loans from the World Bank to enhance their air transport connectivity and infrastructure. On Thursday, the World Bank’s (WB) Board of Executive Directors approved the series of loans, which is part of the Caribbean Regional Air Transport Connectivity Project. The loans include International Development Association (IDA) financing of US$13 million for Dominica, US$17 million for Grenada, US$84 million for Haiti and US$45 million for Saint Lucia. St. Vincent and the Grenadines yesterday received one hundred and eighty (180) additional PCR results from the Caribbean Public Health Agency – CARPHA. These latest results, include one hundred and seventy-nine (179) for the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line crew members. No new positive COVID-19 cases were reported. The Journey to the United Nations Security Council Before July 2019, three countries of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) had been elected to serve as non-permanent members on the 75-year-old United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Guyana had done so on 2 occasions, 1975-67 and 1992-93; Jamaica, 1979-80 and 2000-01, and Trinidad and Tobago 1985-86, meaning that the last time a CARICOM member-state served on the UNSC was 2001.
