The 16th of January is celebrated as Caribbean Soroptimist Day. To celebrate this day, Soroptimist International St. Vincent and the Grenadines presented the Kingstown Technical Institute with ten (10) sewing machines. This was made possible through a partnership with a sister club, Soroptimist International of San Fernando in Trinidad and Tobago, which provided the funds to purchase the machines locally. The machines were previously used at the Barrouallie Technical Institute in its Garment Production Programme from 2022 to 2024. The Government’s Community Kitchens on Union Island continue to ease the burden on residents, delivering approximately 800 meals per week across the Southern Grenadine isle. The kitchens, located in Clifton and Ashton, were launched after Hurricane Beryl, a Category 4 storm that devastated the region in mid-2024. Managed by the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), the initiative aims to assist residents unable to provide for themselves. On January 18, 2025, Stephen Pope, a 58-year-old labourer from Canouan, was arrested and charged with possession of controlled drugs. Preliminary investigations revealed that Pope was found with 261 grams of cannabis, allegedly intended for supply, in Retreat, Canouan, on January 17, 2025.
