If election observers do not arrive in Trinidad and Tobago today, there would be no observers for the August 10 general election. Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said on Friday night that Commonwealth observers will not be coming, but the possibility still exists for Caricom observers to be present. However, Rowley said he is not worried if observers are not able to attend as the country is no “banana republic” and is quite capable of conducting itself. Rowley was speaking during a virtual “lime” event broadcast on his Facebook page on Friday night. Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar had requested that…

CARIBBEAN Airlines (CAL) may be the national carrier of Trinidad and Tobago, but during the Covid-19 pandemic and with this country’s borders being closed, CAL is setting up a hub in Barbados to service the Eastern Caribbean. But that’s just temporary, according to CAL’s communications manager, Dionne Ligoure. She told the Sunday Express that CAL’s pre-Covid plan was to expand into the Eastern Caribbean, and as borders are slowly opening up, the airline is repositioning its hub temporarily. CAL’s plan to increase its service to the Eastern Caribbean comes as the subregion’s dedicated carrier, LIAT, is in the process of…
LONDON, United Kingdom (CMC) — A British-based Citizenship by Investment (CBI) researcher says that St Kitts and Nevis’ CBI Programme has been very successful. James McKay, the founder of McKay Research, who developed the CBI Index, a yearly report published by the Financial Times’ Professional Wealth Management (PWM) magazine, told the newest episode of Plan B, a weekly podcast by London-headquartered government advisory CS Global Partners, that St Kitts and Nevis has scored top points in the CBI Index due to “diligence, citizenship timeline, and mandatory travel and residence”. “Caribbean countries such as St Kitts and Nevis have over 30…

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and the European University Institute (EUI), is expected to deepen ties between the Caribbean and Europe and help The UWI protect the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in the European Union (EU). That centre will help to promote inter-regional and intra-regional development and encourage discourse on how transnational and global issues impact the Caribbean Region and Europe. The UWI and…
Persons who find evidence of any irregularities and have any resulting queries with the voters’ list, should submit same to the Office of the Supervisor of Elections (SOE). This advice was given by Dora James, Supervisor of Elections (SOE) during a Meeting of Registering Officers held last Tuesday, July 21. According to the SOE, every time a quarterly list was published, that was an opportunity for it to be vetted. Politicians and those in government officers are the ones submitting the most queries, she said. The New Democratic Party, for example, had submitted names of deceased persons whose names remained…
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Saharan dust clouds bring copious amounts of well, dust, but scientists say there are benefits as well. For starters, tropical depressions, storms and hurricanes are less likely to develop when big Saharan dust plumes are active over the Atlantic. According to a piece in the Conversation quoting Dr Scott Denning of Colorado State University, big Saharan dust plumes interfere with the formation of Atlantic hurricanes in at least three ways. “First, their very dry air dilutes the humidity whose condensation forms the fuel of tropical storms. “Second, upper-level winds that carry these plumes blow more strongly than…

By Jomo Thomas ‘Revolutions constantly criticize themselves, constantly interrupt themselves in their own course, return to the apparently accomplished, in order to begin anew; they deride with cruel thoroughness the half-measures, weaknesses, and paltriness of their first attempts.’ Karl Marx Every announcement by the government that it has lured another investor to our shores is good news if only these proposed hotels or other investments come to fruition. There is no one in this country or beyond who will want to see the failure of such projects. At the most basic level they will offer jobs as gardeners, cleaners, servers,…
